I can still feel the sting of the email. It was from my very first client, As part of my new publishing services, I was also offering marketing help to local authors and businesses, like this small bakery.

The email was short. “We’re just not seeing the results,” she wrote. “I think we’ll go back to the old way. Thanks for your effort.”

My heart sank. It wasn’t just a rejection; it felt like a verdict. I felt like a total fraud. All the voices of the doubters I’d tried so hard to ignore came roaring back. “You’re crazy,” my friends had said. “You’re not cut out for this.” That night, lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, I thought they might be right.

That one failure almost made me quit for good. Instead, it became the most important crossroads of my life. I realized I had a choice to make. I could become one of three people, and the person I chose to be that night would define my entire entrepreneurial journey.

The Crossroads: Which Person Would I Become?

Type 1: The One Who Gives Up

My first instinct was to become this person. It would have been so easy. I could have deleted the files, shut down my laptop, and agreed with the world that I wasn’t meant for this. This is the person who says, “See? It’s not for me. The status quo is safer.” They take one hit, and instead of seeing it as a lesson, they see it as a stop sign. They surround themselves with others who play it safe, finding comfort in a life free of risk and, ultimately, free of growth. I was tempted, believe me.

Type 2: The One Who Stays Stuck

For about a week after that email, I was this person. I wanted to try again, but I was paralyzed by a fog of self-doubt. My “why” had become blurry. I was full of potential but lacked the clarity to move. This person has the dream but no map. They get stuck in a loop of “what if,” and every small setback reinforces their fear. Without a clear purpose or a mentor to guide them, their motivation slowly bleeds out until they drift back into being a Type 1.

Type 3: The One Who Gets Up and Asks “Why?”

This is the entrepreneur. This is the person I chose to become. After a week of feeling sorry for myself, I grabbed a notebook and wrote a simple question at the top of the page: Why did I fail? I didn’t blame the client or the market. I took ownership. I listed everything I did wrong: I hadn’t understood her customers, my designs were generic, I hadn’t set clear expectations. The list was painful to write, but with every word, the fog started to lift. This person isn’t fearless; they are committed. Their purpose is so clear that failure isn’t an ending—it’s just data. It’s the fuel for the next attempt.

The Real Lessons I Learned from Getting Fired

That single failure taught me more than any business book ever could. It wasn’t about marketing tactics; it was about the mindset that separates those who try from those who succeed.

    1. Clarity is Your Only Compass.

I was stuck as a Type 2 because my ‘why’ was weak. I wanted to “do marketing.” But why? It wasn’t until I redefined my mission—to help small, passionate business owners tell their story—that I found my direction. When your purpose is crystal-clear, it acts like a compass that pulls you through the fog of doubt.

    2. Action is the Only Cure for Fear.

The best way to stop feeling like a fraud is to start acting like a professional. Instead of just dreaming, I took small, concrete steps. I signed up for a free online course in digital marketing. I called three other local business owners and offered a free 30-minute consultation, just to practice and learn. Action—no matter how small—builds momentum and starves fear.

    3. Failure Isn’t a Verdict; It’s a Lesson.

Being fired by my first client wasn’t a sign that I was a failure as a person. It was a lesson that my approach had failed. By analyzing what went wrong, I learned the importance of audience research and client communication—skills that became the foundation of my future success.

    Where Do You Stand Today?

The journey of an entrepreneur is full of moments that will test you. You will face rejection. You will feel like a fraud. In those moments, you will stand at that same crossroads and have to choose which person you want to become.

Will you let a setback be a stop sign? Will you get lost in the fog of doubt? Or will you grab a notebook, ask “why,” and take the next small step forward?

“This decision is yours to make every single day.

What kind of entrepreneur are you choosing to be today?
